Hidden Gems: The Halyard

Finally, having made my way to the Village of Greenport on Long Island's North Fork to embark on an early dinner, while enjoying the sunset over the Peconic River, the Halyard is less than 100 miles from Central Park and under 2 hours from New York City, it is definitely worth the trip if you find yourself looking to take a drive and enjoy fresh, local seafood and duck. The view is amazing, overlooking the Peconic River, as the sun goes down the magic of The Halyard begins, whether you decide to go for dinner which is served Thursday through Sunday or lunch which is served Friday through Sunday.

While the decor is minimalist, the food is not short on the finishing touches, while continuing to utilize fresh, local ingredients. We started with the local Fluke Carpaccio, with Miso, Hijiki and adorned with a beautiful Rice Cracker, tasting like my fish was just swimming in the river earlier in the day. Our other appetizer was the Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras and Hamachi Sashimi with Sweet and Sour Radish. The Foie Gras was seared to perfection while melting in my mouth, the touch of Hamachi and acidity of the Radish, were delectable.

For our main courses, we went with the Dry Aged Crescent Farm Duck and Montauk Monkfish, while I was excited about both dishes, the real gem of the evening was the Dry Aged Duck with Pear, Kale, Sweet Potato and Hazelnut Vinaigrette. The Duck Confit Spring Rolls were crispy in contract to the the Duck Breast which was ethereal, cooked to perfection the skin was crispy while the breast could have been cut with my fork. I found the Montauk Monkfish fresh, and cooked well, however, the Black Garlic Tahini was cloyingly sweet for this delicate fish. The menu stated that this dish was served with Young Mustard Greens, which would have probably offset the sweetness if there were more on the plate, I think they may have been inadvertently left them off while finishing the plate.

Dinner for two $148.82 including 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 glasses of wine and 1 beer without gratuity.
